Tree Ordinance Update

The City is anticipating changes to the City’s tree ordinance that will go into effect in January 2023. While there are changes for commercial and development projects and properties, there are new requirements for existing single family residential properties that will help inform the property owner on ways to preserve trees on their property.

Property owners will be required to submit to the City a Tree Modification Review Form along with bids from a company if they want to remove some trees on their property or conduct major pruning (trimming or pruning or cabling, and any other similar act on branches over 3-inches in diameter or greater). Specifically a form and bids would need to be submitted for the following types of trees before work can be done:

  1. Heritage Oaks (oaks that are greater than 33-inches DBH or greater) located anywhere on a single family residential parcel, and
  2. Any type of tree 24-inches DBH or greater located within 20 feet back of walk (20-feet measured from the back of the sidewalk).

The intent of this requirement is to inform residents on options to tree removal (ultimately to prevent the unnecessary removal of trees and maintain/improve the City’s tree canopy). If removal of the tree is recommended by the contractor, the City is requiring that the resident submit a statement from the contractor stating such (this could be noted on the quote).

The new requirements also state that only those companies that have a City of Woodland business license and an ISA certified arborist on staff can perform tree work within the City for the types of trees identified above (and regulated under the ordinance).

Preserving and maintaining trees in the City benefits everyone with energy savings, air quality improvements, carbon dioxide reductions, water quality improvements, and benefits to wildlife.

Remove Leaves from Gutter

Organics Carts Can Help Prevent Street Flooding

To prepare for a wet winter, make sure to clear your gutters and storm drain inlets of leaves and other debris. Always fill your organics carts first with fallen leaves and other green waste to avoid leaves being blown or washed down the storm drains.

Have a lot of leaves? Request a second organics cart at no additional charge. Contact Waste Management at (530) 662-8748 to order.

Gift of Water

Conserve Water During the Winter

Even in cooler months, you are able to make a difference in the effort to conserve water. Below are 3 tips on what you can do during the drought to save water:
  • Update Your Irrigation Schedule: Shorter days and cooler temperatures means landscapes need less water, even if there is less rain in the forecast. Decrease the amount of run time and/or days you have your irrigation on. Woodland is currently under a Stage 2: Water Warning which restrict irrigation to 3 days per week.
  • Switch to a WBIC: With a weather-based irrigation controller (WBIC), your system will skip watering when it rains and adapt to local weather conditions. The City offers Woodland water users an exclusive Rachio 3 discount and a $150 rebate for WBIC's! Learn more at Envirowoodland.org/Rebates.
  • Monitor your Water Use: Check your water bill and see if the water consumption is right for your home. If there are sudden increases in your bill when your irrigation is off or reduced, go on AquaHawk at EnvroWoodland.org/MyWaterUse to check for leaks.
