Tip of the Month

This summer, take advantage of the sunshine and warm temperatures by air drying your clothes instead of using a clothes dryer. Not only will you save energy, but you'll also extend the life of your clothes.

Smart Irrigation Month

July is Smart Irrigation Month

Celebrate Smart Irrigation Month with us! This campaign aims to raise awareness about efficient outdoor water use, ensuring the sustainability of our community's water resources now and in the future. Throughout July, the peak month for irrigation, we're promoting cooler, smarter, and more conservative watering practices.

Here are some tips for optimizing your irrigation schedule:

  1. Water Cooler: Water in the morning before 10am or in the evening after 6pm to minimize evaporation during peak daytime temperatures.
  2. Water Smart: Regularly adjust your watering schedule based on seasonal weather conditions. For a customized schedule, visit BeyondTheDrought.com.
  3. Water Less: Prevent runoff by repairing broken sprinkler heads and adjusting their arc. Excessive runoff can harm local waterways and increase costs.

Interested in monitoring your irrigation system's water usage? Use AquaHawk, our city's free water use portal, to track water consumption during each irrigation cycle. Access hourly and daily reports at EnviroWoodland.org/MyWaterUse to stay informed and make informed decisions about your water usage.

Goals

S.M.A.R.T. Goals for a Plastic Free July

This month is Plastic Free July where people from around the world pledge to reduce their plastics, but that’s the easy part; making those changes can be hard. This is where “S.M.A.R.T” goals come in; a strategy for making goals that are “Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound”.

For example, a smart goal could be “Reduce personal use of single-use plastics by 50% within the next three months.” To make that a reality, make an action plan to use over the next few months. Here are some ideas:

  1. Identify single-use items in your home and reusable alternatives to purchase as replacements when the product runs out
  2. Choose products with minimal or recyclable packaging or items available at refill or bulk buy dry stores
  3. Keep grocery or produce bags, reusable straws, and utensils in your car for when you need them

What goals will you set for yourself this year? Visit www.plasticfreejuly.org for more ideas and to take the challenge.
