Tip of the Month

This holiday season, embrace sustainable gift-giving by choosing experiences over things, reusable wrapping like fabric or scarves, and homemade treats instead of store-bought items. Decorate with natural elements like pinecones and greenery, and compost any food scraps from festive meals.

Also, consider skipping the flocked tree this year. While they might look pretty, flocked Christmas trees are not accepted in street pile collections. The material sprayed on the trees makes them non-compostable and must be disposed of as trash.

Free Compost at the Community Center

Free Compost in Woodland!

The City of Woodland is offering free, self-serve compost at two convenient locations:

  • Woodland Community & Senior Center – 2001 East St
  • Solar Panel Parking Lot – corner of Court St. and College St.

This nutrient-rich compost is made from food and green waste collected from your organics bins and processed at the Yolo County Landfill’s compost facility. Compost piles will be refilled as weather permits.

Follow EnviroWoodland on Facebook or Instagram for the most current updates on compost deliveries.

Please bring your tools and containers or bags to load your compost. Free buckets will be available at each site (while supplies last). Please be mindful of others and vehicles in the area.

Great Scott! It’s that time of year again—time to recycle your old calendar and grab a new one!

The 2025 Yolo County Recycling Calendar is now available at City Hall, Woodland Community & Senior Center, and select local retailers in downtown Woodland. This calendar is chock-full of recycling and composting tips, clever puns, and inspiration to help you achieve your sustainability goals in 2025.

Use your Green Waste Cart First

Be Smart, Use the Cart

Rain and heavy leaf-drop make a perfect recipe for clogged drains and localized flooding. Help prevent flooded streets by using your organics cart first whenever possible, instead of placing piles out in the street.

For homes with large yards or lots of greenery, consider getting a second organics cart—it’s FREE! Call WM at 530-662-8748 to request your second cart.

Cooking Oil Recycling at the Yolo County Landfill

The City of Woodland can no longer accept used cooking oil at the Water Pollution Control Facility due to new requirements for cooking oil recyclers. If you deep-fried your turkey this year or regularly have large amounts of cooking oil, you can take it to the Yolo County Landfill for free recycling during Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) days: Thursday - Saturday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

For small amounts of cooking oil, you can safely add it to your organics bin in compostable or paper bags for composting.

Remember, only rainwater should go into our storm drain systems—never cooking oil or other waste.
