Tip of the MonthPlanning to decorate your pumpkins this fall? Skip the paint and glitter — they can contaminate compost and prevent your pumpkin from being accepted in your organics cart. If you prefer a mess-free option, use pumpkin decorating kits that let you press reusable face pieces or accessories into the pumpkin instead. Just remember to remove any plastic, metal, or other non-organic parts before placing your pumpkin in the organics cart. Keeping your pumpkin paint-free ensures it can return safely to the soil as rich compost — closing the loop on fall’s most festive crop!

Give Your Pumpkin a PurposeAs Halloween fades, don’t let your pumpkin haunt the landfill! Instead, give it a new purpose by placing it in your green organics cart for composting. Pumpkins break down into nutrient-rich compost that helps nourish local soils and gardens. If your pumpkin is unpainted and uncarved, consider checking local social media pages for local farms requesting pumpkins to feed their animals! Please don’t place pumpkins in street piles — they can clog storm drains, attract pests, and make street sweeping more difficult.

Leaf Drop Season Is Almost Here!As the leaves begin to fall, it’s time for Woodland’s Green Waste Street Pile Program to help keep our streets clean and safe. Residents can place yard trimmings and leaves in designated street piles for collection, but please follow the program guidelines to ensure everything runs smoothly. Keep piles no larger than 5 ft long x 4 ft wide x 4 ft high, away from storm drains, curbs, and sidewalks, and make sure they don’t block bike lanes or traffic. Plastic bags, dirt, and pet waste can contaminate green waste, so please keep those out of piles. If your pile is small enough, consider using your brown-lidded organics cart instead to keep streets clear and minimize the chances of leaves plugging up storm drains. Full program rules and collection schedules are available at CityofWoodland.gov.

Compost Pile Program UpdateDue to recent rain and scheduled events at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, the City’s free compost pile program is temporarily on hold. Wet conditions make maintaining the compost piles difficult and can create safety and drainage concerns. The Community Center compost pile will return once the grounds dry out and events conclude. The Court and College Street location will reopen in the spring, following the end of the rainy season. We appreciate your patience as we pause the program to keep it safe and accessible for everyone. In the meantime, residents can continue to compost at home using their green organics carts — every bit helps keep valuable material out of the landfill! Updates will be posted on the Envirowoodland social media pages as the compost piles reopen.

Imagine a Day Without WaterEach year, Imagine a Day Without Water invites us to see how crucial our need for water is by visualizing life without it, just for one day. Very quickly, we learn how indispensable water is in our everyday lives, and how our health, environment, and economy depend on reliable access to clean water. This October 16th, take time to invest in our shared water future. Small actions at home can make a big difference. Here are four ways to conserve water this fall: - Scale back outdoor watering. With cooler weather, your yard needs less water. Cut back run times and water no more than three days per week.
- Reuse rinse water. Instead of letting the tap run, rinse produce in a bowl and reuse that water for houseplants or your garden.
- Upgrade to WaterSense products. These certified toilets, showerheads, and faucets use 20% less water without compromising performance.
- Teach others. Talk with friends, family, and neighbors about how they can save water too. Share what works for you and encourage simple changes like fixing leaks and using water wisely outdoors.
