Woodland Public Library Kicks Off Celebrating 150 Years of Excellence with an Ice Cream Social

City of Woodland News Posted on June 12, 2024

The Woodland Public Library is proud to launch a year of celebrations celebrating the library's history and involvement with our community for the past 150 years with an ice cream social on Saturday, June 29 from 10 AM – 12 PM, hosted by the library and its Teen Advisory Board.

We invite Woodlanders to join us for free ice cream, barbershop quartet singers, robot demonstrations, a photo booth, library history, and much more! Additional celebrations and events are in the works for the next twelve months, including the arrival of a new bookmobile.

In 1874, a group of women started a book sharing club that grew into the Woodland Public Library. These women hosted an ice cream social to raise funds for the collection. The June 29 social is a tribute to these women, who started a century and a half of fostering a love of reading and learning among generations of Woodland residents.

“During one of our Teen Advisory Board meetings, we were discussing the history of our library and how a group of women in Woodland hosted an ice cream social to bring the community together,” explains Sarah Mandujano, Teen Advisory Board President. “Inspired by their efforts, we decided to host our own ice cream social to honor the remarkable women of Woodland who established and maintained our library in 1874. I'm looking forward to the Woodland Public Library's 150th Celebration because it offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our library’s rich history and connect with others in our community.”

Since its establishment, the Woodland Public Library has served as a cornerstone of knowledge, culture, and community in the heart of Woodland, California. The library has evolved into a vibrant hub of activity, offering an extensive collection of books, digital resources, and engaging programs for patrons of all ages.

"We are thrilled to be celebrating 150 years of serving the Woodland community," says Greta Galindo, Director of the Woodland Public Library. "This milestone is a testament to the enduring importance of libraries in our society and the incredible support we have received from our patrons over the years. We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate this occasion and look forward to many more years of inspiring curiosity, imagination, and discovery."

Over the course of the next year, the Woodland Public Library will launch several programs and initiatives aimed at expanding access to its resources and engaging new audiences. These initiatives include the introduction of a new bookmobile vehicle to enhance outreach efforts to underserved communities and a year-long challenge for patrons to read 150 books.

This year of celebration is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Woodland Public Library, Measure R, local partners, and the entire Woodland community. Their contributions have helped to ensure that this milestone is celebrated in style and that the library will continue to thrive for another 150 years and beyond.
