Changes Coming to Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

City of Woodland News Posted on December 18, 2023

Beginning in early 2024, City-owned public electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) will transition to upgraded ChargePoint technology as well as a new fee structure.

In support of the City’s sustainability goals, the City installed several EVCS downtown nearly five years ago. These stations are in the “solar lot” at the north-east corner of College and Court Street, in the Woodland Public Library parking lot, and in the First Street lot across from City Hall. In the coming months, the City will also install new chargers in the City-owned parking lot just south of the Hotel Woodland.

All of these stations will transition to ChargePoint technology. The City encourages residents to download the ChargePoint app and research the platform's features. In addition, charging at these locations will come with a fee. These stations will charge $0.49/ kWh to cover the City’s costs for electricity as well as the projected cost for maintenance and replacement of the chargers. Additionally, to further encourage turnover of the EV charging parking spaces, the City will implement an "idle fee" of $2.50 for every 30 minutes the vehicle is plugged in and not actively charging after a 30 minute grace period.

City staff found that these rates are consistent with equivalent charging stations. For example, the City of Winters recently completed new public charging stations and also approved a rate of $0.49 / kWh.
