Prevent Sewer Backups by Remembering the Three "Ps"

In your kitchen, never pour Fats, Oil or Grease (FOG) down the sink. In your bathrooms remember the three “P’s”! Only Pee, Poo and Paper down the pipes. A little bit of good housekeeping by all can prevent an expensive call.

  1. 1 Don't Throw Trash to the Bowl
  2. 2 Oil from Pan to Drain

Disposing of Used/Waste Cooking Oil

Used or waste cooking oil should never be disposed of in the sewer system. Once the oil cools it will create a semi-solid substance that will comingle with anything in the sewer system like wipes, hair, q-tips and alike. These items can create a back-up in the system or interfere with underground equipment that are meant to keep the waste moving. Sewer back ups can occur in your home or in our streets and no one wants that as clearing the blockage can be expensive.

You can dispose of small quantities of used/waste cooking oil by pouring the cooled oil into a container and securing it with a tight closing lid. You can take an additional step of putting the sealed container into a sealed bag that you are disposing of anyways, this will prohibit it from leaking on its way from your home to the landfill. Freeze this container and place it in your garbage can the day of your pick up.

Larger quantities of used/waste cooking oil can be disposed of at the Yolo County Landfill Thursday – Sunday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm without an appointment.

Don't Flush Those Wipes

Just because the label says "flushable" doesn't mean that you should flush it. Unlike toilet paper, flushable wipes do not dissolve. Instead, they can become caught up in sewer lines, create blockages, and cause sewage overflows. Flushable wipes also get stuck in the City's sewer pumps.

Every year, our crews spend many hours repairing pumps that have been clogged by flushable wipes. Be kind to your pipes; instead of flushing, please dispose of these products in the trash can. For more information view our Think Before You Flush flier (PDF).
